We awoke to another snowfall on Friday, and my goodness didn't we grumble.
Then the news from Japan started to dominate the news bulletins and suddenly a bit of snow seemed unimportant.
At the moment the main focus is on maintaining the nuclear reactors and preventing an explosion on the scale of Chernobyl, finding survivors, looking after those who were evacuated and then the horrible job of cleaning up the towns.
So, a bit of snow, and road closures in the Highlands? A bit inconvenient, but not worth mentioning really.

Japan was hit by a severe earthquake on Friday (magnitude 8.9). Japan has a high standard for building earthquake proof buildings and for making sure that the nuclear reactors are protected. But there was no protection against the tsunami which hit the east coast and devastated towns.

The TV footage showed not only cars being swept away but whole buildings being carried along by the water.
The town of Minamisanriku has been flattened by a 35m wall of water. Thousands of lives have been lost, and the search for survivors goes on.
There are remarkable stories of survival though: 60 yr old Hiromitsu Shinkawa, of Minami Soma city, was located 10 miles out at sea on some floating wreckage . Sadly his wife has not been found. At the moment the main focus is on maintaining the nuclear reactors and preventing an explosion on the scale of Chernobyl, finding survivors, looking after those who were evacuated and then the horrible job of cleaning up the towns.

It really does put things into perspective, doesn't it. Certainly here in Ontario Canada we're very lucky - few tornadoes, little flooding, no wildfires, low earthquake risk.
Thank you for the suggestion about espalier trained trees, I think it would be great to have more! these are my first ever apple trees though so I have to make sure I can look after them first.
