(aqua)planes, trains and automobiles

We endured an epic journey on Tues. to get to Glasgow, a journey that should normally take 1hr 45 mins, took 3 hours each way. Scotland was hit by a fierce winter storm (spring? it is spring now, isn't it?) which affected all means of transport.

Our first train from the park'n'ride into Edinburgh was cancelled, so we missed the connecting train, our tickets were no longer valid and had to be upgraded to peak time. Changing our tickets caused us to miss the next train (of course) but 15 mins later we were on a train, which was jam-packed with tired commuters and we were told that that train was cancelled and we had to cross the platform to the next train, which then had to make additional stops to accommodate passengers from the cancelled train.

We got to Glasgow Queen St at 6.40pm, the show we were hoping to see started at 6.30 pm. Oh. Dear.
Instead of heading off to the underground train to the SECC (which is normally very good but we didn't want to risk it) we grabbed a taxi and hoped we would still get into the show.
We did. Just. One minute before the lights went dim.
We hoped our return journey would be less eventful, but that was not to be the case. We used the underground, that was fine. We jogged (well D put us on a route march !) between Central and Queens in the driving rain/sleet and yes !there was a train in 15 minutes. We managed to miss that by 10 secs because our food from Burger King had taken so long- and as this was our first meal that evening we needed something. But there was another train and it wasn't cancelled. So we hopped on that and ate our now chilly food.

Somewhere along the line the train had to slow to about 15 miles an hour because of the amount of water on the tracks. It was now about 11.45 pm and we could see the M8 from the train where the traffic wasn't moving any faster, and there seemed to be an awful lot of flashing blue lights around.

We got to Waverly and of course had missed the last connecting train to the park'n'ride so we went for a taxi and had to wait 45 minutes for a cab, as the horrible weather which was bad for trains was good business for cabs.

Finally we got to our car and started the last leg home and drove very carefully along the country roads as there were enormous deep puddles everywhere and we didn't want to finish our journey by aquaplaning across the road. (We found out on Wed that a neighbour of ours had got her new car stranded in a deep puddle/pool about a mile from home!)

We got home at 1.15am. We had set off the previous day at 3.45pm, 9½ hours earlier. We could have driven to central France in that time. We were so tired, we thought that we had.

So what was the show we had been to see?
For my birthday treat we went to see Diversity, the dance troupe which won Britain's Got Talent 2009. I'm not normally interested in Cowell's reality tv style shows- I don't care if the act seeking our support is grieving over the loss of a hamster, or has to win for their Great Aunty Beryl who is 108. All I'm interested in is the stage performance- can they sing? can they dance? that's it.

Diversity certainly can dance, and unlike singers, their performance cannot be enhanced by autotune.
It was a fantastic show, these boys/men love what they do, and their routines are infused with wit, humour and playfulness. And, as D said, it is wonderful that dance has become mainstream, the audience was all ages and backgrounds (sometimes we've been to see ballet and it's been all teen girls and their Mums, or we've been the only straight people in the audience) and hopefully these young guys are going to have long fulfilling careers ahead of them.

I just hope that next time we see them the journey is not so tiring or so frustrating.
