I was reading Winter in Madrid while we were there, and it was incredible reading about events in the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza del Sol and the Prado Museum and having been there myself.
scultura centra del Prado The tourist buses were great for getting round the city and seeing so much without getting too worn out. We bought a 2 day pass and hopped on and off as we chose.
Madrid is a very elegant city, and very clean too, with the rubbish taken away in the night ( at 2 a.m.... wish I'd remembered my ear plugs) and no graffiti or litter in the city centre. Amazing art works like these heads near the Prado, no coke cans or rubbish in them, just there to enjoy.
catedral On Wednesday we went to the Palacio Real to see the changing of the guard which was quite something, and visited the new cathedral, inaugurated by Pope John Paul II, and saw the remains of the original Arab city wall.
The Arab roots of Spain are strong, although more remains in the south. Franco had troops of Moor soldiers to repress the communists in various cities during the civil war.

We had paella for the first time too, opting for pollo y carne rather than seafood . It was delicious. D really enjoyed his breakfast at the local bakers, Hontanares, having churros , cafe y zumo de naranja each morning.
