Film night : The Reader

Set in postwar Germany, The Reader is a story about the coming of age of a young man and also a nation coming to terms with its past.
It's a very moving story and Kate Winslet (Hanna Schmitz), Ralph Fiennes (Michael Berg) and David Kross (young Michael Berg) are all very good. (Winslet won an Oscar for best leading actress).
The film moves from events in 1958 to the early 60s then later in the 80s and 90s. The wartime events are described but not seen as the character's reactions to those events are the main focus of the story.

After watching it D and I had a long discussion about his experiences in Germany in the early 80s and how they led him to reading a lot of Gunter Grass and Heinrich Boll. How does a nation come to terms with the horrors of the concentration camps?

A very good story, which generated a thoughtful discourse, well acted 4 stars ****
...and now I want to read the Chekhov short story "The Lady with the Little Dog".
