Bee prepared

my neighbours must think I've gone completey nuts now (instead of only 98% nuts) as I've been dashing around my garden armed with a jamjar in pursuit of bumble bees.

I've had no luck whatsoever, and had to put up with much giggling from my teenage kids. Harrumph!

But today I took the jamjar with me as I walked the dog down the woods, and after 5 attempts I managed to catch me a bee.
He (most likely a he) is now esconced in the 5 star des. res. in the garden (from ecotopia), with a bowl of sugar water and a dollop of honey to dine upon. I have to keep him there for 24 hours then let him find his way out, and if he is happy then he will use it as his base this summer.

Jen thinks it is slavery, but really the bee has been headhunted (whole fuzzy bodyhunted?) for the live in post and if he doesn't like the house he is free to leave tomorrow.

I hope he stays though, I'm not sure that the neighbours can cope with any more mad antics from me ( I'd better bee-have??? oops !)

Fingers crossed that he chooses to stay! We've got the opposite problem - too many bees. I think they like the nectar from the oriole and hummingbird feeders.

Hm, technically it's a she. At the moment the queens are out after hibernation, and looking for nesting spots. Once she's settled in,she'll start up the colony, with female worker bees. Males will come later in the season IIRC.

All you need to know about bumblebee friendly gardening and much much more is on www.bumbleeconservation.org. I'm a member, and more than just a bit nuts about bumbles :-)

Bee catching - sounds like a new sport! Hope he/she is happy in it's new home!

Finally, I know what a BEE HOUSE is . . sounds interesting. Do youhave to keep feeding him until the flowers start to bloom, or is there enough pollen around for him to survive on?

I must check out the link and see what I can find out.

Oh, will he acquire any friends for his new home?
