Meet Lucia, who is a few months older than me, and cost my Mam about £50 (plus a deposit of a secondhand knitting machine) in 1961. She's a German girl, does straight stitches forwards and reverse (nothing fancy, just efficient) and came with instructions in German, which my Dad had to try to translate (and he hadn't studied German for more than 15 years!).
She's been a useful member of the family all that time, has made many dresses, jackets, blouses and curtains and is now helping me to learn to sew. Mam gave her to me about 5 years ago and it's taken me all this time to pluck up courage to use her. Lucia stitches so fast I feel that I'm going to be dragged under the foot and get my head stitched.
So, I've taken it slowly yesterday and today putting together the curtains for J2's room. Thankfully the fabric from Laura Ashley is wide enough and doesn't need piecing in. J2 loves design programmes and pointed me to this one by Kirstie Allsop which has a useful how-to for making lined curtains. Hopefully I'll get finished tomorrow, but I'm in no rush, as I'm trying to avoid weird accidents!
