The "X" factor , part 2

(posted at 2.25pm) it's 4 days since the election, and it's still not clear who will be PM and which coalition (if any) will run the country.

It's driving the political hacks nuts, the TV news can only report that "there have been discussions"  and "it's very positive". The journalists need more more meat than that to chew on!

It's always good to dig around in the news reports for interesting snippets though-
the odious BNP not only didn't get an MP elected but they lost all 12 of their council seats in Dagenham & Barking. It's quite horrifying to realise that so many had been elected in the first place and were involved in running local services . But an active campaign supported by Billy Bragg (Dagenham born and who has remained true to his socialist principles) has rooted out that pernicious cancer. I think there's still an MEP to campaign against in the next Euro elections.

Shabana Mahmood and Yasmin Qureshi (both Lab) are the first Muslim women MPs to be elected. It's good to see the House of Commons starting to reflect that the UK is multicultural. (although when I was telling my daughter all these positive snippets she asked "can a woman be PM?".. oh dear...Is Thatcher's influence fading?! ).

every vote counts- Michelle Gildernew (Sinn Fein) took Fermanagh & South Tyrone by 4 votes
a local councillor won his seat in Great Yarmouth by chance when two candidates each polled 1,034 votes after 4 recounts. A deck of playing cards was produced and the candidates drew a card, highest value winning! Charlie Marsden drew a 7 and Bob Peck drew a 3.

Democracy- I love it!

A woman as PM: perhaps not so much the memory of Thatcher fading, as the (imho legitimate) question if she was a woman or something from another planet altogether :-p

I keep telling everyone: wait till we get to the Belgian elections in June and we'll show you the ins and outs of political horsetrading as an art...

It's really fascinating isn't it! And those close counts make you really feel that your vote is important.
